Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

The removal of the third molars, or “wisdom teeth” is considered by many to be a rite of passage into adulthood. These teeth are typically removed in the late teens and early twenties to avoid the development of more complex dental health concerns. Dr. Sareen recommends that wisdom teeth are removed for a range of reasons:

  • The developing teeth are impacted in the bone
  • The wisdom teeth have erupted and are pushing neighboring teeth out of position.
  • The wisdom teeth are partially erupted, creating a flap of gum tissue that can collect food, debris, and bacteria, setting the stage for infection.

Signs you may need your wisdom teeth removed:

  • Sudden jaw pain
  • Ear pain
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Difficulty chewing or opening/closing the jaw
  • Swollen glands in the neck area

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and are concerned about your wisdom teeth, Dr. Sareen offers emergency tooth extraction services in Nothern VA. Our Fairfax office welcomes new patients and offers the special pricing mentioned above for your procedure.

Wisdom Tooth Removal: About the Process

Dr. Sareen is one of few area dentist who use advanced digital technology to facilitate treatment planning and tooth extraction for the best possible result. Using digital x-rays and 3-D CT scanning, we are able to pinpoint adjacent nerves and soft tissue to avoid during the extraction process for less discomfort and a reduced chance of complications. These scans are quick. painless and offer minimized exposure to radiation.

Once your diagnostics are complete, a local anesthetic is applied for your comfort during treatment. For anxious patients or when the extraction involves bone tissue, Dr. Sareen offers oral conscious and IV sedation. The tooth is carefully removed and the opening typically sewn shut with a couple of small stitches. Dr. Sareen will provide personalized post-treatment care instructions, including whether you will need to return for the removal of non-dissolving stitches.
